Understanding Clown Phobia
It is hard to explain to people why anyone would have a phobia, and clown phobia is no exception. It is probably easier to understand why people would have a fear of rats for example. They are ugly dirty creatures who could bite you and cause an infection. The reality is that very few humans ever experience this, yet people do understand the fear. This would be a similar response to fear of public speaking or fear about heights.
When it comes to the more obscure phobias like feathers, buttons and clowns then the general public is not quite so accepting of this irrational fear. However, for the individual who is suffering from this phobia, it is every bit as real for them. We all have fears I believe and some many more than others. What is real for you may not be for another but the fact that you have such a fear at all, should hopefully allow you to just understand how it must be like for people who suffer from clown phobia.
My first thoughts would have been that this fear had come from a bad childhood experience. Perhaps the person had been frightened at a circus or a birthday party by some unsuspecting person dressed as a clown. For some that is actually the case. The person at work I mentioned, had been picked from a circus audience and planted on top of a horse that was trotting around the circus ring. He had been petrified that he would fall off. he then associated that fear with that of the clown, who in his mind, endangered him in the first place. Clearly this is a related or associated fear but it is for certain, a very real fear.
For others who suffer from clown phobia it does run deeper in their psyche. The fact that the face looks sad and is covered with make-up is in itself a frightening image. It would be similar to people who suffer from a fear of heights. They are perfectly fine standing on the ground but ask them to stand on a chair and they freeze. The actual height is not the important thing for that person, it is simply the fact that they are not stable and on the ground. For the person who suffers from clown phobia, it is simply the image itself that is frightening.
Like any phobia it can be treated and cured through a blend of counselling and helping techniques such as hypnotherapy. If you have never thought about how restrictive having a clown therapy can be, then pause for a moment and think of this. You regularly see clowns at circuses, on posters, at birthday parties, on the TV, in shopping malls and in many films. Those who suffer from a clown phobia will try very hard to avoid all these situations and that alone can place a huge restriction on a person's life.
The other big difficulty for those who suffer from this is that almost everyone else associates clowns with happiness, fun and laughter. That only serves to further isolate the person who suffers from clown phobia as they know that people will really struggle to understand why anyone could dislike and try to avoid what is supposed to be a thing of humor and laughter.

A phobia is an irrational fear of a particular something. For example, some people have a fear of flying, some have a fear of heights, some people have a fear of closed spaces. This gives a measure of control to the patient and slowly but gradually, he begins to take control over the fear. Finally when the patient is exposed to the fear in a real life situation, he does not suffer the same panic attacks.

It is important since the disease can have a great negative effect on not only the patients' lives but also others around them making them suffer at the same time. Everyone is scared of death and the dying process to one degree or another. The problem arises when a person is so fearful of death that it impacts negatively on their day-to-day living. I've seen this fear with my own eyes and watched a loved one deteriorate mentally and physically because they were terrified they'd drop dead in the street. Religion plays a large part in a lot of people's lives and can in turn affect how they deal with the facts of life and death. For many religious people, whose faith wavers and is beset by doubts, the fear of what comes, or what does not come, after death can be immense. On the other hand, for devout believers, the fear of possibly suffering eternal damnation can just as equally lead to panic attacks as that of the doubter. They may not be overly fearful of what happens after death nor fear (in relative terms of course) the process of dying to any great degree. However, much of their mental focus is spent worrying about what will happen to their nearest and dearest when they die.
If someone is suffering from a terminal illness, it is understandable for them to be concerned about leaving loved ones behind. However, the problem comes when this type of fear is held by a healthy human being with no known life threatening conditions. The concept plays out in their minds despite the fact they are perfectly fine. New mothers, single parents and carers for elderly relatives are most prone to this type of anxiety.
Diagnosis of Thanatophobia will likely come from the sufferer themselves who will be aware that their fears of death and dying are stronger and perhaps more irrational than the people around them. Family members, friends and work colleagues might also recognise an anxiety disorder related to the fears and try to persuade the sufferer to seek professional help. The best way to find a proper diagnosis of this type of anxiety is from a mental health professional. They will be able to say once and for all what the problem is and recommend a variety of solutions to the phobia.
As with all types of anxiety disorder, Thanatophobia is best treated by exploring the origins of the fear and changing how the brain reacts to thoughts and events that trigger the anxiety. Medication can be used to alleviate the symptoms of fear related to death and dying but it won't get rid of the underlying problem which will continue to fester until properly tackled. Fear of dying does not have to be a life-long condition and it can be overcome and outsmarted in relatively little time with the right techniques. Instead of struggling with morbid fears of death, life can instead be lived from one day to the next. It can also be filled with positive thoughts and an absence of anxiety and phobias.

3- The unknown realm of the Naturalistic
And last but not the least; we come to the mysterious naturalistic type of horror. It does not rely on fear-some monsters or other phenomena, but deals with simple unexplained and unexpected elements and situations, inducing fear and dread. These, often, can come true in one gruesomely unfortunate way or another in each of our lives. Such an example could be the famous element of death itself.
Although one type of genre might scare one person, it does not necessarily mean it will have the same effect with another. Fear is a very personal matter and what scares you is generally related to your beliefs and your phobias. For those who believe in ghosts, one thing might be really frightening and it may scare you out of your wits, while for some who do not believe may not even be startled. All this has something to do with the twists of our own lives, the dark places of our minds we haven't explored and the odd experiences we usually have.

A phobia is an extreme and abnormal fear of a situation or item. It is a mental disorder that is treatable through counseling sessions.
