A phobia is an irrational fear of a particular something. For example, some people have a fear of flying, some have a fear of heights, some people have a fear of closed spaces. However, these are just a few fears that people have. There are some very unique, in fact strange fears as well. For example, there is a fear known as the fear of fears! Another strange fear is a fear known as monophobia which is the fear of being alone. Even though this fear may sound strange, it is quite real and people may have it without knowing that they do.
People that have monophobia don't like living alone due to specific symptoms associated with the disease. For example, when left alone, they may experience symptoms such as nausea, depression, anxiety, and so on. Other symptoms could include an irregular heartbeat or and palpitations.
There are many ways to treat the condition. But first must come a realization of the fact that as with other mental illnesses, a person can simply not be talked out of the condition. There must be a specific regime that the person may have to go through so that the fear can be addressed. Cognitive behavior therapy and systematic desensitization are two of the most common methodologies used for treating the condition. Another word for systematic desensitization is exposure therapy. However, cognitive behavioral therapy is mainly used for the treatment of this condition and in fact 75% of the patients are treated this way.
Systematic desensitization or exposure therapy is a process in which the patient is exposed to the element that produces fear in a gradual and controlled way. Since the patient is not being exposed to the element all of a sudden, he does not panic and slowly begins to realize that the element is in fact harmless. This gives a measure of control to the patient and slowly but gradually, he begins to take control over the fear. Finally when the patient is exposed to the fear in a real life situation, he does not suffer the same panic attacks.
People suffering from monophobia must realize that theirs is a treatable condition. It is important since the disease can have a great negative effect on not only the patients' lives but also others around them making them suffer at the same time. This is because it tends to take a lot of time of friends and family who have to effectively babysit the patient all the time and this puts great strains on relationships.
