The genre of horror has been there for many ancient generations, creating an eerie atmosphere of terror. Since the earliest times, people have told chilling and unnerving tales to amuse themselves. This genre is basically built on the fear of the unknown and the unexplainable, linked to our fears and our phobias. The idea of horror is basically to keep people on the edge of their seats and always leave them with "what if" questions. Horror can generally be classified into three freaky categories:
1- The frightening world of the Supernatural
This generally deals with myths and monsters ranging from the ever popular vampires, haunting ghosts, daunting demons, wicked devils, creepy spirits, spine-chilling monsters, blood-curdling zombies, spell-casting witches and other twisted imaginations. Often created for the fun of scaring people and having that hair-standing effect on you, these monsters have ruled our films and literature for eons, effectively keeping us awake at night where every groaning voice and creaking noise, sounds like something evil. Be sure to look in your closet and under the bed!
2- The ghastly galore of Science
This second category consists of all the mad and crazy scientists who proudly create mutants only to have them wreaking havoc all over town. It combines the concept of science and horror to bring an explosion of gore and sickening monsters running amok. It usually stars the military operating a covert mission, studying bio-warfare, discovering a virus that is useful in creating blood thirsty zombies out of your every day normal humans. A blend of gory experiments, lots of blood and nutty people, this category is ever popular in keeping you awake at night.
3- The unknown realm of the Naturalistic
And last but not the least; we come to the mysterious naturalistic type of horror. It does not rely on fear-some monsters or other phenomena, but deals with simple unexplained and unexpected elements and situations, inducing fear and dread. These, often, can come true in one gruesomely unfortunate way or another in each of our lives. Such an example could be the famous element of death itself.
Although one type of genre might scare one person, it does not necessarily mean it will have the same effect with another. Fear is a very personal matter and what scares you is generally related to your beliefs and your phobias. For those who believe in ghosts, one thing might be really frightening and it may scare you out of your wits, while for some who do not believe may not even be startled. All this has something to do with the twists of our own lives, the dark places of our minds we haven't explored and the odd experiences we usually have.
